After being penned up indoors for months during the cold weather, when springtime rolls around, everyone is usually more than ready to get outdoors into the warmth and sunshine. Everyone is concentrating on mowing the lawn for the first time and planting vegetables and flowers. No more coats, gloves and hats to wear. It is time to put on the t-shirts, shorts and sandals.

If you are like everyone else, there is a lot of things that must be done outside in the yard, but then there are also things that you want to do too. Weekend cookouts, swimming parties if you have a pool, and just sitting outside in the late evening watching the sun go down. All of these summer activities are great until the bugs come. It can be horrible trying to swat and squash your way through an evening with mosquitoes swarming, bees buzzing, gnats and flies biting you every second.

Spray on insect repellents are always an option, but they are sticky and usually toxic in some way. Citronella candles are said to be helpful, but some people don’t think they work very well. Spraying toxic insect repellent in the air will kill some of the bugs, but it also means that you are likely to breathe in some of that toxic spray as well. Well then, how can you safely rid yourself of all of those flying pests that just will not leave you alone?

You can go high tech and use an electronic device to help. Purchasing an electronic insect killer to hang on the porch or patio can help get rid of these flying felons once and for all. You don’t have to spray yourself down with anything, spray nothing in the air or never have to light a candle. Once you plug in the zapper, the bugs are automatically drawn to it. The electronic insect killer works fast and efficiently with just a zap.

How much area you electronic insect killer will reach depends on which one you purchase. Electronic zappers can cover over an acre of space easily. You can use the same electronic insect killer year after year if you care for it properly. As long as it is warm outside , use it for flying bugs, but when the weather gets cooler, you can pack it away for the winter time.

There are many anomalies when considering concrete waterproofing. Not least of which is the strange individuality of organic compounds when mixed with chemicals. You can never be too certain as to the outcome. That being said, whatever solution is used, it is vital to look at the condition of the concrete and note its position in relation to water.

Sealants such as the topical asphalt based ones have been, and still are one of the prime methods of protection against water erosion of walls and foundations. Methods and products are constantly evolving. There are several additives for instance, which are designed to protect from water vapors that percolate through concrete causing much damage.

The market today is full of brand-new products that are capable of keeping water out. These are designed and graded according to how much waterproofing is required for the particular job in hand. Most manufacturers will claim, especially in the case of outdoor sealers, that they will provide powerful protection against any kind of extreme weather. These designer sealers are a special blend of liquid that has the ability to seep into the very structure of the concrete making a much more powerful seal against the most heavy duty type of water problem one can envisage. This includes stains.

They are claimed by manufacturers (in the case of exterior sealers) to allow superb protection against even the most robust weather conditions. These high specification products use special blends that can be absorbed into the fabric of the concrete making it impervious to even the worse kinds of water-based conditions, including stains. They are claimed to be suitable for pond and pool sealant, with the chemical barrier they provide. That makes them ideal for the average do it yourself yard job.

The spread is up to three hundred and fifty square feet, and the mixture is pressure sprayed or rolled on to the concrete surface. An extra (and huge) benefit is that this type of sealers act as a defence against crayons or painted graffiti, acting in similar fashion to Teflon coating on pots and pans. There are products that are based on crystal technology. The concept is simple; since concrete is porous, by introducing special crystals to the mixture, as they grow they seal the pores, or air pockets in the concrete. The good thing is that when the inevitable cracks appear overtime, in the concrete, as water penetrates, it feeds the crystals and they begin to grow again and fill in the cracks. Brilliant!

There are also products on the market whose foundation is based on the new crystal technology. It is a simple idea; because concrete is porous by nature if you mix a special type of crystal to the mixture, as the crystals grow and expand they automatically close up the gaps in the concrete. It is a very efficient technology for sealing up those hairline cracks that often appear overtime. The crystalline mixture can be troweled in to fresh concrete, sprayed on, added to water and simply applied to existing or new structures.

Many of the sealers mentioned in this article contain ingredients such as silica, pozzolans, and (ash like substance) which strengthen and protect from water vapors and moisture generally. A further benefit of these additives is the fact that they also resist the effects of solvents and oil based damage, as well as offering resistance against scaling and pitting of the surface, making concrete waterproofing more durable than ever.

Mycelium Running by Paul Stamets has been the perpetual best-seller on popular mycology since published in 2005. It’s an indispensible reference book for anybody working the land, especially foresters, farmers and environmental cleanup contractors. It’s also a great book for anyone interested in growing their own food mushrooms.

The book is a treasure trove of useful practical information on what Stamets refers to as mycofiltration (of water), mycoremediation (of toxic waste), and tips on how mushroom mycelium can help improve soils and boost productivity in farming and forestry with less use of pesticides and fertilizers.

A detailed description of Mycofiltration, the use of mushrooms to filter waste water, is given in one section of the book. It lists recommended mushroom species and materials to use in creating the mycofiltration bed, as well as dimensions, depth, layers, etc. Mycofiltration beds like this can be effectively used for both industrial waste water and farm runoff.

Not only does it solve the problem of farm runoff and E. coli contamination of nearby streams, it can also yield highly palatable food mushrooms, and the bed itself can be dug out every 2-3 years and then used as an excellent fertilizer for the farm.

Another piece of useful information for farmers and gardeners found in Mycelium Running concerns the no-till farming method as opposed to the conventional method of plowing the fields after harvest. No-till farming helps promote saprophytic fungi (decomposing fungi), which break down organic material at a pace better suited to plant-life than the rapid and heat producing breakdown by anaerobic bacteria, which are the primary decomposers when stubble is plowed under. The mycelium of saprophytic fungi also binds the soil to prevent erosion and loss of valuable nutrients.

For forestry, not only do saprophytic fungi help break down and recycle organic matter. They also help combat many parasitic fungi (blights) that may kill large numbers of trees. Stamets gives useful suggestions on how to seed beneficial saprophytic fungi in blight infested forests as a natural “fungicide,” fighting fire with fire, so to speak.

Mycorrhizal mushrooms can also be seeded to support the forest, or they may simply be encouraged to grow naturally by using more enlightened methods of forest management.

Most plants benefit from partnerships with mycorrhizal fungi, especially trees, which become much more drought resistant as well as disease resistant when they partner with a mycorrhizal mushroom species.

Mycoremediation is a term invented by the author of Mycelium Running, Paul Stamets, which is now in common use among mycologists. It refers to a method whereby toxic waste may neutralized through the use of mushrooms.

Petrochemicals and biological warfare agents can be effectively broken down by mushroom mycelium, as can dioxin and toxic industrial waste. Even toxic levels of chlorine, which is used as the universal biocide, can be neutralized by some species of mushrooms. Bacterial contaminants like Staphylococcus sp. and E. coli can be killed, and heavy metals can be absorbed by mushrooms to then be removed from a site.

Mycoremediation has also been shown to be the most economical method of cleaning up toxic waste sites, up to 95% cheaper than some common conventional methods.

This plethora of information is merely the first half of this 300-page tome. Part III, which makes up the second half of the book, is an instruction manual on how to cultivate your own mushroom mycelium, which can be used for the above listed purposes, or to grow your own medicinal or culinary mushrooms. And seriously, who doesn’t love gourmet mushrooms? In other words, this is a reference book for every household.

Dr. Markho Rafael has worked in natural health since finishing Chiropractic College in 1996. He currently specializes in medicinal fungi, frequently consulting two reference books: Mycelium Running by Paul Stamets for medicinal, biological and chemical properties of mushrooms, and Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora as the most complete identification guide of American mushrooms.

Also known as instant shades, portable shades are structures which are designed to be easily carried around and can provide a user with instant shade on the fly. They are generally lighter than their fixed counterparts, as a result can be a bit more flimsy and easy to break. However, this is compensated by the fact that portable shades can be stored in small spaces and assembled with a minimum of effort.

Portable shades are used for many of the same reasons one would use fixed shades except that they are more versatile in that they can be brought from place to place. The majority of casual use is for recreational purposes, at such events as beach or block parties where people spend extended time outdoors but not near any building structures. Recreational use can also happen at home perhaps when many guests are invited over. Moreover, portables are used for business reasons.

In what follows we describe a few kinds of instant and portable shades for different kinds of purposes.

Normal awnings are composed of a fixed or retractable frame upon which shade cloth can be stretched and then mounted over a door or window. In a similar fashion bamboo roll up blinds help educe energy costs by preventing solar radiation from passing through the window. The awning then blocks not only light for those who are standing immediately under the awning, but also those who are near the window or door and are inside the house. Similarly, portable awnings are composed of a frame over which a fabric is stretched except the frame is on wheels and thus can be positioned where ever desired.

Many people find that pool use necessitates outdoor shades of some sort except in the least sunny climates. The canonical shade for the pool is the outdoor umbrella. But the umbrella has several limitations, some of which center around their shape, the obtrusive table underneath, or the incomplete shading from the side. As such, portable pool cabanas have been developed which provide more privacy for one or two people. They are like small changing rooms, or perhaps can be accommodated to seat a few people.

The outdoor canopy is typically a medium to massive structure that can house dozens of people at once. Placed onto a patio it becomes a deck canopy. It is supported by strong steel poles, a system of ropes to hold the wall and room fabric together. The portable canopy is much simpler, consisting of four poles, an overhead frame and a top fabric piece only. This makes it easy to carry around and many businesses use them when the sales force is out on the streets and need shelter. The top fabric can serve as an advertisement with the company’s logo.

Portables do not have to be static structures assembled and dissembled all the time. The portable umbrella is mounted onto a metal frame or hitch that is affixed to a vehicle. This is very convenient if the users are constantly moving from spot to spot in a vehicle and need quick assembly of an outdoor shade. Tailgate party goers may find this portable shade to be most useful.

Niche detail resources on outdoor sun shade are available. If you are intent on the purchase of roll up bamboo blinds, come check out our site.
