Aladdin’s flying carpet was probably a Persian rug. While a Persian carpet of your own probably won’t fly in the literally sense, it will bring a dazzling air to your room.

Persian rugs are very popular and always will be. They have wonderful colors and designs. In many cases Persian rugs are sometimes the heirloom that many hold onto from generation to generation. As the Persian rug ages it actually is its best when it is about 30-40 years old.

Another important thing to remember when choosing a Persian rug for your decor is that Persian rugs and “Oriental” rugs aren’t the same thing. An authentic Persian rug is made in one of the regions formerly a part of the ancient Persian Empire, parts of modern-day Iraq, Iran and Turkey. “Oriental” rugs – a somewhat outdated but still used term – are made today in many parts of Asia and Eurasia of many different fibers. Always check on where an area rug is made before buying it.

Next, consider the elaborate designs of a Persian rug when choosing one for a room. These designs typically fall into three categories: geometric, floral or pictorial. It’s important to compare these designs to the style of the room in order to choose one that’s right for the decor. In some cases, pattern can almost be more important than color in selecting the right Persian rug for your room.

For instance, one of the most popular of designs for historic Persian rugs is known as a “medallion” style. This pattern has a large center element, called a medallion, with elaborate scrollwork or vines woven around it. This design can be a stunning focal point on its own, but it may not be right for your setting if your intention is to get people to look at your furniture or its grouping.

Geometric or floral patterned area rugs are the most common for other homes. They are easier on the eye and won’t be too dramatic.

There are a few area rugs out there which are copied by the Persian area rug. You’ll know the difference due to the price. These contemporary Persian area rugs are a great way to bring the feel of a real Persian rug into your home without having to break the bank.

In some cases many individuals have purchased a “so called” Persian rug but only to find out it was a fake. The only way you’ll be able to notice the difference is that the antique Persian rug is hand-knotted or tufted rather than made on a machine.

So why not jump on a magic carpet ride and enjoy the Persian rug lifestyle?

If you found this information about decorating with rugs helpful, then you are going to love these oriental area rugs; and in particular these floral persian style area rugs.
