Lawn fertilizing is an integral part of any lawn care regimen and should be taken very seriously. The right fertilizer can make or break the way a lawn looks and grows. Professional lawn care services can provide essential information in this respect as to what type should be used and how much.

Depending on where you live, there are a correct number of times a year to add fertilizer to a lawn. For the most part, twice a year is the norm but more can be added for those that are in areas with longer growing seasons. These extra fertilizing should not go over four times a year to prevent over doing it.

The reason for fertilizing in the fall is to help strengthen the grass just before winter sets in to help it return in the spring. These winterizing type fertilizers are extremely important in keeping a lawn in good health all year round. These will help to stimulate the growth of the roots, helping the grass to make it through the toughest weather.

There are also products that not only feed the lawn but also kill weeds and prevent further weed growth. Though multi-tasking can be good, it is important to note that most weed and feed products contain pesticides. Pesticides have been linked to cancer, reproductive problems, and neurological diseases. In most yards, most of the product is wasted because it is spread over all areas of the yard, including spots containing no weeds. These chemicals then wash into streams and leach into ground water.

There are organic fertilizers that contain no chemicals and may be found locally. These contain nothing to harm the environment and can help to keep a lawn looking just as good as the ones that contain chemicals. The organic ones will also tend to release their nutrients at a much slower rate than the other fertilizers that are on the market.

One of the easiest all natural ways for lawn fertilizing is to evenly cover the grass with about a of compost. The compost can help to provide the lawn with much needed nutrients. Grass clipping also may be left on the lawn to help add extra nitrogen into the soil.
