Heavy blinds and shades will have to go. You need to brighten the room up and to do that you will need to place sheers over the windows or a fabric covering. You can still have your privacy at night but open them up the rest of the time.

On the floor you will need to add an area rug. A large area rug can be hung on the wall which will give the room a larger feel. This also creates patterns and textures that were not there before. Adding a bright area rug on the floor is another good idea because it will make the room more cheerful and bright. Area rugs can mark a conversation area and designate certain things like a tea room.
