If you have an older home, you may find that you are feeling closed in by all the doors and room barriers around you. These homes were built this way because the heating and cooling systems were not as efficient, as the one we have today, and often time homeowners needed to close off unused parts of there homes, in order to maintain a comfortable temperature in other areas. However, by removing these doors and barriers you are able to create an open space floor plan that will change the whole appearance of the inside of your home.

Since the majority of homeowners like to leave their homes open, doors are no longer an essential part of home design. Builders have begun leaving spaces open, and they no longer place door in entry way or every door way of the home. In fact, the placement of doors tends to be limited to the areas that require privacy, since as the bedrooms and bathrooms within the home.

Rooms, such as your living rooms, dens, dining room and kitchen, do not require a door. The exception to this rule would be a set of French doors places in the entry way to a formal dinning room, as this make the look of the room more exquisite. Otherwise you will not want to waste the space with a door. If you decide that you would like to have doors on these areas then you may want to consider pocket doors. These doors can closed all the way, and when not needed they slide into the wall and give an appearance as if there is no door at all.

The only down side to installing pocket doors, is that it is not a simple task. They are easy to do when you are working on a new construction, however when remodeling this task is a lot tougher then many people realize until they begin the work.

Pocket doors take up a lot of room inside the wall, so you do not just account for the opening, but have to account for the width of the door and a little more inside of the wall. They are a great way to have doors in certain smaller rooms so that the door doesn’t take up so much floor space or bang into another close wall like in a laundry room or small bathroom.
