Caring For Orchids In A Greenhouse Is A Rewarding Hobby
The gorgeous tropical flower known as the orchid is also classified as an aerial plant. The aerial orchids cling to rocks or other plants and derive their moisture from the air and rain, so they need a humid climate in which to grow. Even if you are in the wrong climate for orchids you can still grow them in your greenhouse with the proper care and attention to their needs. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you care for your hothouse orchids.
These orchids get the nutrients they need to thrive from the air and rain and from organic debris that accumulates on the supporting surface around them. To maximize their health, you can also add some potting mix. With the potent combination of orchid fertilizer and potting mix many orchids will bloom for days on end.
Orchids need to be watered thoroughly at least twice a week but they need to have humidity and moisture daily in order to remain healthy. You can provide this by giving them a light misting every day or by setting them on a humidity tray. A humidity tray is easy to set up: just place some stones or pebbles on the bottom of a shallow tray. The bottom of the orchid pot should not touch the water so when you add water to the humidity tray, do not put enough to cover the stones, themselves. Refill the tray regularly as the water evaporates.
Also make sure that the greenhouse doesn’t get too hot for the plants. The orchids will require some ventilation from time to time if overheating occurs in the greenhouse. Air can become stale within the structure so make sure there is a vent or window which you can open to allow fresh air to enter and cool the temperature.
In the wild, it is natural for orchids to remain in darkness for some part of each day, a condition you will want to replicate in the greenhouse. So be sure to provide several hours of darkness every night by turning off all lights in and around the greenhouse.
Growing orchids in a greenhouse is an enjoyable and rewarding hobby. You will be able to enjoy the beautiful and fragrant blooms daily, and you can even cut a few to display in your home.
